Sharing Is Caring!

If you haven’t changed your Wi-Fi password on Optus yet, I suggest you do it now. Why do I say that?

It’s because the router’s default password is printed on a sticker on the bottom of your modem, and so is on display to just anyone.

This makes hacking your Wi-Fi password a cakewalk for hackers because some of them might already have access to most, if not all, the default passwords of a router.

Besides Optus’ documentation warns customers against using default and simple passwords. Updating the default Optus password can help keep your home network safe and improve your device security. Let’s go ahead and learn how.

Hold on a minute!

Before changing your Wi-Fi password, it is important to know that Wi-fi networks are vulnerable to brute-force attacks.

This is when a hacker or attacker starts by collecting small samples of your network’s encrypted data (which although sounds like a very complex task, can be quite easy to accomplish when they are within range of the router).

Then hundreds or even thousands of passwords are fired at that retrieved data until one eventually unlocks the encryption. When that happens, the attacker gains access to your network password and can start accessing your data and devices.

So although I’m sure most of you already do this, it is still important for me to tell you to choose a very secure (and memorable) password

Changing your WiFi network name & password

Alright then, below are easy-to-follow steps to change your Optus Wi-Fi password:

Important

Before you can change your Wi-Fi network name and password, you’ll need to find your login for the modem settings page. This can be found printed on the sticker on the back of your modem.

  1. Connect your device to the modem. You can use either Wi-Fi or one of the LAN ports on the bottom of your device
  2. In order to access the modem settings web page, you need to locate the admin IP address located at the bottom of your modem. It’ll be of the form 192.168.x.x. Now enter this address into any web browser of your choice
  3. You should now be connected to your modem’s settings page
  4. From the main screen, click the Network → Wi-Fi Networks
  5. You’ll see the Wireless 2.4GHz and Wireless 5GHz connection types. Both will have the same WiFi name (SSID)
  6. Choose your preferred connection type and then scroll down to the Configure SSID 1 section
  7. Do you see the SSID configuration table? If you do, enter the preferred Wi-Fi network name in the SSID name field. To change your Wi-Fi password, enter your preferred password in the WPA KEY field
  8. Click Save

Note

If you perform a factory reset, the Wi-Fi network name and password will be changed back to its default.

Also, it is recommend you repeat the process to change both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz wireless connection types as naming the 2.4GHz and 5GHz the same will ensure the modem connects to which ever signal is stronger.

Conclusion

Just remember, when most people think password, they immediately go for date of birth. So using your birthday or the birthday of somebody close to you is not really secure.

If you still want to use your birthday (because it’s just easier to remember), you should try mixing it up with some other characters. That’s all folks, I hope this article helped you to change your Optus Wi-fi password.
